Toby at School |
Mary Ayers writes about this photo: "Hi, This is my brother as he started school. Note the debonair twist to his tie and the insouciant wearing of home knitted jumper. My brother Tobs was a singular pupil at school, who, as you might imagine, did not take kindly to doing things in the normal way. He didn't conform! No, my brother did things his way, right from the start. he didnt learn to read for some considerable time as he found it irrelevant. After all, it took valuable time away from drawing, which he was happy to do all day long, even at this early age. I well remember the absolute mortification of finding Tobs doing his work out in the corridor, because he was not concentrating. Although his hair had darkened slightly by this time, he was an absolute wow with the older girls. All my friends loved Toby, mostly in a maternal sense - he was very diddy - and wanted to come round my house so they could play happy families with Tobs as their baby. He really was very sweet, but did not put up with much of their cosseting and soon went out to play manly games with his brothers, much to the disappointment of my mates. (lots of love Maryxx) |
